Falafels are something I do like eating. However owing to them being deep fried I have always tried to refrain myself from having it too frequently. So perhaps I limit it to a binge meal or those occasions when you are enjoying a nice Mediterranean meal or spread.
I have never made falafels at home. I have read numerous recipes online and I am aware of the key ingredients that are required. So today I tried to make them 🙂 What I did not do is – did not deep fry them, did not serve them with pita and did not serve them with pickles and onions.
Here is what I did do. Read on the ingredients and how I put it all together:
For the falafel:
2 cups chickpeas boiled
1 onion chopped
4 garlic cloves chopped
A bunch of coriander chopped
1/2 lemon squeezed for its juice
1 teaspoon paprika powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
2 spoons tahini paste
2 spoons of olive oil
For the dressing (Orange Vinaigrette):
1 part orange juice (freshly squeezed)
1 spoon balsamic vinegar
3 parts olive oil
A pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper
For the salad:
A mix of different greens you like (spinach, chard, rocket, lettuce etc)
A few slices of Avocado
A few slices of tomato
Dry roast the onions and garlic. Then in a food processor blend the chickpeas, roasted onions and garlic, coriander leaves, cumin seeds, lemon juice, salt, paprika and tahini paste.
Then take a heated non stick pan and put in about 2 spoons of olive oil. Make round shaped patties or balls and place it in pan. The idea is you keep roasting them until they brown and then flip them over. For me they looked like a burger patty 🙂
Next mix in all the ingredients of the orange vinaigrette.
Putting it together:
Place the bed of your greens in a plate. Place the falafel patty on it. Cut some avocado and tomato slices and place over the greens and falafel. Then pour over the salad dressing generously. Serve!!
This recipe is vegan and vegetarian. Also for the salad you can add in more stuff like onions or feta or anything else you like in your salad 🙂
